All everyone does here does is pretend / we are somewhere /
someone else / not scrolling a multi-tab farm of forwarded
emails / election results / a shopping cart slowly loading with
hair creams / with wine tumblers room sprays books / tools to
help us / be alone / miss our friends / grieve our gone our sick
& hiding is such a thrill / a grief / a waste because we see it all
in our glasses anyway when we minimize & the light changes our faces /
when we scroll / when our eyes dart like gnats / when we
stand suddenly in a work meeting because there is a knock / because
our toddler is puking a stork song on the carpet / because we need to stretch
& forget whoops we aren’t actually wearing pants today / aren’t
very alive today / aren’t exactly tethered to the dirt except for this
thin yarn of a miracle / square of coffee-stained carpet from
which we keep watering our gardens / our lives the size of juice boxes /
stardust gathered on the speck of a pin / on a
Sunday / squawking zoo sounds with our niece / cackle as she swerves
her first step / when the camera rattles / blacks out /
tells the whole entire half truth of it / or to squeeze our father’s aging hand /
six states away / he slinkies a sobriety coin over his knuckles
like a dare / one good prayer / the last coast guard / leaving for shore
